Recently, an Optima MAX-XP Tabletop Ultracentrifuge has been added to the infrastructure. This equipment was acquired by a grant (Ref. IR2020-1-USAL11) awarded to the University of Salamanca by the Junta de Castilla y León through the INFRARED2020 call, co-financed with FEDER funds.

In the Edition of Science Week 2021, two online disseminations talks were organized for ESO/Bachillerato students. Below you can see the talks that took place::

1. Introduction talk by Dr. Beatriz Santos entitled "Passionate about Science" plus the talk by Dr. Marina García Macia entitled "Our cells also recycle".


2. Introduction talk by Dr. Beatriz Santos entitled "Passionate about Science" plus the talk by Dr. Cristina Rodríguez and Dr. Verónica Bobo entitled "Researching the brain".

Dr. Marina García Macía has participated in the CIBER's ImproCiencia event to show what the CIBER is and some of the research of its different thematic areas.

Marina García Macía, PhD. has recently obtained the recognition of 'Article of the month' from the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her publication that could represent a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of fatty liver disease.

The Institute of Functional Biology and Genomics (IBFG) is once again participating in Science Week. The activities will take place between November 18 and 26. This year we will have face-to-face and on-line activities; some of them need previous registration.

The activities that have been organized are:

1. What do you know about science?
Activity to be held at Colegio San Jerónimo de Alba de Tormes where students of 4th ESO and 1º and 2º of Bachillerato will talk with IBFG scientists about the functioning of science in Spain. It will take place on 19/NOV/2021 from 12:00 to 14:00.

2. DNA purification workshop
Activity with 5th and 6th grade students at CRA Domingo de Guzmán, Doñinos, Salamanca. It will take place on 18/NOV/2021 and 19/NOV/2021.

3. Passionate about science: our cells also recycle
Online talk for ESO and Bachillerato students. Activity aimed at educational centers. Online activity to be held on 19/NOV/2021 - 12.00-13.00 hours and requires prior registration.

Online talk for students of ESO and Bachillerato. Activity aimed at educational centers. Online activity to be held on - 26/NOV/2021 - 12.00-13.00 hours and requires prior registration.

5. Get to know the scientists of the IBFG
Face-to-face activity at the IBFG facilities where scientists will explain first-hand what research they do and how science works in Spain. Prior registration is required. There are two possible dates.

6. Virtual Gymkhana "From boot to gown: the exciting path of drug discovery" 2nd Edition
A disease ravages our streets. A large number of birds fly over the city. Everything seems to indicate that both phenomena are related. HELP US FIND THE CURE!

Activity that requires previous registration. This activity will be carried out twice, the first one for people over 18 years old and the second one for ESO and Bachiller students..

Dr. Bolaños' group publishes a review in the journal Cell Metabolism where he discusses with Dr. Gilles Bonvento the role of astrocytes in the modulation of behavior and brain activity..

Students from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Salamanca are part of the Micromundo USAL 2021 Project. This project aims to develop content and informative activities to familiarize the population with the resistance that some microorganisms develop to antibiotics, and is coordinated locally by the Institute of Functional Biology and Genomics (IBFG).
Micromundo is an international initiative based on a research and teaching project that aims to bring science closer to young people in society, and to raise awareness of antibiotic resistance among the younger generations. The project originated at Yale University under the name Small World Initiative in 2012, and the University of Wiscosin adapted it as Tiny Earth in 2018.

The publication highlights the academic and research trajectory of the professor of the Salamanca-based research center and collects different articles written by international authors related to the line of study he is developing at IBFG.
